Summer on the Bee Ranch

Summer is one of our busiest seasons on the bee ranch. Over the last several weeks, we have spent countless hours making queens and splitting hives. It has been amazing to watch a tiny queen become the heart of a brand new colony, and every split is an investment in the future of our apiary.

Now that much of that work is behind us, our focus begins to shift. Some of our hives have been left alone to do what bees do best, collect nectar and store honey. These strong colonies will hopefully reward us with a honey harvest later this season.

Other hives have a different job. Instead of producing surplus honey for us, they are working hard to build up enough stores to carry themselves through the long Michigan winter. Every frame of honey they save is fuel they will need when flowers are gone and snow covers the ground.

One of the biggest lessons beekeeping has taught us is that every hive has a different purpose. Some are growing, some are producing, and some are simply preparing for the seasons ahead. Success isn't expecting every colony to do the same thing, but understanding what each one needs and giving it the best chance to thrive.

As we walk through the apiary this time of year, we're reminded that good things take time. The work we put in during the spring is now beginning to show, and we are excited to see how the rest of the season unfolds. We can't wait to share our honey harvest and more bee adventures with you in the months ahead!
